People that work in the IT industry knows that it is not always fun and games. There will be times that the individual will be pulling an all-nighter just to get the job done but this is all worth it if the program runs. So, what does it take to be an information technology project manager? The most important aspect of anyone to hold such a position is one's credentials. The person has to be familiar with the various programs that are commonly used to date. In some cases, the individual will have to take a test and those who pass will get a certificate. Another important part to become an information technology project manager is years of experience. Getting a degree in programming is just the first step in order to move up the corporate ladder. It is only after learning from others with more skill, being promoted and handling more responsibility that anyone can say he or she is ready to work for others on a contractual basis and deliver what is required. The project manager may work alone or have subordinates working under him or her to help find a solution that will make the business grow. The right way to do it will be to ask questions, assess and understand the current and future needs of the business then move forward from there. This begins with the IT project manager and the project creator having a little talk. Both have to agree on specific areas of the project that need to be worked on to avoid conflicts and delays. There is usually time frame in each phase and the person should also know what to expect later on since this will serve as a gauge if things are going well. The brief talk should give the IT project manager an idea of what things are need to start and complete the work. These may include additional manpower, budget and the equipment needed so delays can be avoided. A smart IT project manager must also be able to communicate well with those involved. He or she must update those on top on how things are going and that additional support aside from those mentioned before are given should these be needed. There have been instances that the public may not be happy with the work done despite the fact that there was a lot of praise from the client. Should this happen, the person should be ready to come out with a public relations plan to remedy the situation. Time must also be made to fix these errors and make it much better. Creating and running a program is not the only thing you do as the IT project manager. You will also have to care of costing, scheduling, planning, tracking, terms & conditions as well as risk management throughout the entire life cycle, delivering profit and total customer satisfaction. It takes a lot of time and work in order to become an information technology project manager. Some handle multiple assignments since this is not a full time job. The most important thing is to finish whatever is given on time and do some follow up when necessary so the client will be able to give a call back when something else comes up. |
