Information technology project management requires people to pool the resources together and finish the job within a specified amount of time. Certain procedures have to followed making this method both an art and a science since this sometimes requires the person to think outside the box. But doesn't everyone do that regardless of our occupation? The answer is no because when people in the IT industry undertake a project, this is usually a one time thing. It hopes to achieve the desired result with the least amount of effort that will be beneficial to the customer. There are some prime characteristics of project management. First, it should be objective and change oriented.. Companies do not have the luxury of sitting on their laurels, which is why improvements have to be made consistently. The failure to do so can prompt other companies to take the advantage losing one's position in the market. Second, in order for it to work, there must first be coordination with everyone within the company. How can it be useful to the customer if the same cannot be said for those that are working within the organization. Companies selling goods should be able to process it faster in order for this item to be delivered. Third, as much as the company would like to spend a fortune in making this a reality, it just can't because of budget constraints. Every penny has to be accounted for since this will affect the profits of the firm until it is completed. Lastly, it has to be functional. When someone writes a computer program, debugging is the only way to make sure it runs. This means this should be tested over and over gain until all the glitches have been ironed out rather than getting complaints from the regular clientele. Since this isn't a full time job, the professional has to take on various projects at the same time. There are even some that work in teams that may live far apart and the only way to communicate with each other will be to upload all the information of the client into a single server thus, drastically cutting down the time needed in completing the project. Throughout the entire project period and even after that, the project manager or those in the group can review and modify things at any given time. The client on their part may come up with project management software to help these professionals. This may serve as a guide and advise those working on the program the status it is currently in. It takes years before an IT professional may become a project manager. This is because the programs learned in the classroom are not enough to make the individual quality for the position. The person will have to learn from others and when the time comes, step up to handle an assignment. There be some setbacks or failures along the way but this is part of becoming someone better. Information technology project management can only succeed when the objectives have been designed, the support of everyone, if there is a set budget, it is useful and of course someone qualified to take on the job. That is a tall order and will have its share of challenges at first but things will be much better in the long run.
